About the Book
★★★★★
A gifted rider in a world where ladies never race, Maggie Linden is determined that her horse will become a champion. But the one man who could help her has vowed to stay away from thoroughbred racing forever.

An Irishman far from home, Cullen McGrath left a once prosperous life in England because of a horse racing scandal that nearly ruined him. He's come to Nashville for a fresh start, hoping to buy land and begin farming, all while determined to stay as far away from thoroughbred racing as possible. But starting over proves harder than he'd wagered, especially when Maggie Linden's father makes him an offer he shouldn't accept yet cannot possibly refuse.

Maggie is certain that her mare, Bourbon Belle, can take the top purse in the inaugural Peyton Stakes, the richest race ever run in America. Maggie only needs the chance to prove it. To give her that chance – and to save Linden Downs from being sold to the highest bidder – Maggie’s father, aging, yet wily as ever, makes a barter. His agreement includes one tiny, troublesome detail – Maggie must marry a man she's never met. A man she never would have chosen for herself.

Tamera Alexander’s masterful storytelling shines once again in her newest novel, To Win Her Favor. She crafts of beautiful, romantic story, incorporating quite a diverse and enticing range of historical details - thoroughbred racing, post-Civil War hardships, racism towards both the recently freed slaves and the Irish. And with plenty of ups and downs and twists and turns, along with well-crafted, fleshed out characters, I loved every bit of To Win Her Favor, from beginning to end, and felt a bit sad that it had to come to an end. No fan of Tamera Alexander will be disappointed reading this novel. It’s one I would certainly recommend - and has me eager to read more from Tamera Alexander in the future.

About the Book
★★★★★
Just when Charity's wild imagination failed her, a flesh-and-blood hero walked into her life.

Best-selling author Charity Anderson returns to her hometown of Kings Meadow to defeat a bad case of writer's block. She imagines she'll spend a lonely summer writing and then return to her home in Boise. She soon finds herself caring for Buck Malone, a wilderness guide – and the object of her unrequited teenage crush. But what else can she do? Her dog Cocoa caused the accident that left Buck with a broken ankle and wrist, taking him off the trail for weeks of prime tourist-season work.

Buck and Charity have gone different ways since high school, and at first it seems they have little in common. Buck loves the simple, low-key life he's made for himself in the mountains of Idaho, and she's a woman accustomed to the faster, bustling pace of the city. But spending so much time together has Buck hoping to change her mind about staying in the small town she thought she'd left behind for good.

It's a summer for discovering that young love is a spark not soon extinguished.

Another contemporary romance from Robin Lee Hatcher, Whenever You Come Around returns to the charming town of Kings Meadow, Idaho and follows Love Without End in the series (but can easily be read as a standalone). This novel, like the previous one, offers an incredibly sweet romance, with quirky circumstances, independent characters, humorous moments and understandable obstacles to overcome, and I thoroughly enjoyed the entirety of this delightful story. Quick, engrossing, and utterly heartwarming, Whenever You Come Around is a read that won’t leave fans of contemporary romance disappointed. I recommend it.

Every Bride Needs a Groom by Janice Thompson

About the Book
Small-town girl Katie Fisher is planning her wedding. Sure, her boyfriend hasn't managed to pop the question just yet, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't enter a contest in Texas Bride magazine to win the dress of her dreams, right? But when her boyfriend breaks up with her and takes a job in another town – the very same day Katie wins her dream dress – her world is turned upside down. Should she claim her prize? And will the hunky former pro-basketball player who runs the swanky Dallas bridal shop – yeah, you read that right – catch on to her humiliation if she does?

Janice Thompson designs a romance sure to delight, with plenty of fish-out-of-water moments, a hilarious supporting cast, and more of the wedding biz world her readers adore.

Like the previous handful of novels I have read by Janice Thompson, Every Bride Needs a Groom is an easily enjoyable and delightful read. Katie Fisher, eager to marry her long-time boyfriend, enters a contest to win the wedding dress of her dreams - only to win it on the same day he decides to break-up with her. With the numerous quirky small-town and big-city characters surrounding charming Katie, this novel is chock full of fun surprises and entertaining moments, as she decides how to proceed in such unexpected (but not entirely unpleasant) circumstances. I just loved this book and I am sure fans of Thompson’s novels will enjoy it, too. Every Bride Needs a Groom is fun and funny and perfect for those looking for a light contemporary read.

From Good to Grace: Letting Go of the Goodness Gospel by Christine Hoover

★★★★★
God is calling you to something greater than good.

So many of us feel as if we do not do enough and, in fact, are not enough. We try hard to be good – a good friend, mom, wife, Christian, employee, or ministry leader – hoping for that "atta-girl" from God, some heavenly assertion that we matter. In the process, we find ourselves living by a lesser gospel: the gospel of goodness. It's a gospel without grace, and in the end, it's good for nothing.

With compelling illustrations from her own life and from Scripture, Christine Hoover helps you start asking, "What does God want for me?" before asking, "What does God want from me?" You'll find yourself breathing a sigh of relief at this powerful message of freedom and hope. Rather than serving God out of obligation or duty, you'll be compelled to love and serve God with great joy.

In the book From Good to Grace: Letting Go of the Goodness Gospel, Christine Hoover addresses an easily-ingrained mentality of pleasing and deserving God with personal “goodness.” Yet, as Hoover shows with personal experiences and biblical truths, this prevalent mindset neglects the true freedom God’s grace offers and she challenges her readers to move from this idea of goodness to embrace the truth of grace. It’s an insightful read with valuable perspective and encouraging points and I found From Good to Grace to be a quite worthwhile read. I recommend it.

About the Book

Can a woman held captive by her family make it back to the one man she knows she can trust?

When Sarah Montgomery’s father succumbs to his long illness, Sarah is faced with a life-altering choice: submit to her brother’s will and marry the deceptive Ben Croftner… or escape through the dangerous American West to reclaim the heart of her beloved Rand Campbell at Fort Laramie, Wyoming.
From captivity in her family’s home, Sarah makes her decision – and begins the perilous journey to Wyoming by train.
But even in the company of Rand’s brother, Sarah does not receive the reception she had hoped for. The necessity of a military wife has preempted her, and Rand is already engaged to Jessica DuBois, the seductive daughter of the post commander.

With her heart broken and her life in ruins, Sarah has no choice but to remain at Fort Laramie and try to win Rand back. But things will get tougher before they get easier… the obsessive Ben Croftner has just shown up in Wyoming.

Colleen Coble’s A Heart’s Obsession continues the story of Sarah Montgomery and Rand Campbell that began in A Heart’s Disguise. Though the summary on the back of the book again reveals much of the installment’s storyline, I still enjoyed following these characters out West, which, of course, added more drama and many difficulties to the uncertain romance. It’s a delightful, exciting read that naturally left me eager for the third part, A Heart’s Danger. Readers of A Heart’s Disguise will not want to miss this entertaining second part of the story. (I would recommend not picking up A Heart’s Obsession until reading A Heart’s Disguise - these books should definitely be read in order.)

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest by Melanie Dickerson

★★★★★
Swan Lake meets Robin Hood when the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant by day becomes the region's most notorious poacher by night, and falls in love with the gamekeeper.

Jorgen is the gamekeeper for the wealthy margrave, and he is in pursuit of the poacher who has been killing and stealing the margrave's game. When he meets the lovely and refined Odette at the festival and shares a connection during a dance, he has no idea that at night she is the one who has been poaching the margrave's game.

Odette is caught up in a ring of black market sellers of poached animals. She thinks the game is going to feed the poor, who are all but starving, both in the city and just outside its walls. However, most of the animals are being sold by the greedy leader of the ring – her stepfather. When Odette discovers what he is doing, she threatens to expose him, putting herself in great danger.

The gamekeeper finds her poaching one night and shoots her, wounding her. When he realizes who she is, he hides her to keep her from being executed by the margrave and also to protect her from her stepfather. Jorgen and Odette will band together to stop the black market poaching ring… as they fall in love. But what will the margrave do when he discovers his gamekeeper is protecting a notorious poacher?

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest: another delightful fairytale retelling from Melanie Dickerson that fans will not want to miss. As she combines Swan Lake and Robin Hood, Dickerson creates an utterly engaging and captivating story of love, secrets and forgiveness, centered around a strong-willed, kind-hearted female protagonist and her stunningly handsome, down-to-earth male counterpart - as well a few conniving characters, for good measure. The gripping action-filled plot moves quickly, thoroughly keeping my attention from start to finish, and I just couldn’t stop reading (and with main characters so easy to like, I just had to know the ending). Overall, I just loved The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest and I would highly recommend this entertaining read for any readers of fairytale retellings.

Thanks to BookLook Bloggers, I received a copy of The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest and the opportunity to honestly review it. The Legacy by Dan Walsh & Gary Smalley

About the Book
★★★★★
One young man is about to discover the true cost of independence.

For years, Doug Anderson has been drifting slowly but steadily away from both his family and his faith. His parents have been trying to reach him before he falls too far. His friend Christina hopes what she is seeing online isn't true. But sometimes you have to hit bottom before you're ready to grow up.

Just as things begin to settle down a bit, Doug's life takes a turn that requires every bit of faith and patience for both his family and Christina – whose growing feelings for Doug, a man who writes her off as not worth his time, keep her off balance. Will Doug's crisis finally clear his vision and help him focus on what he has right in front of him?

Since reading The Desire last fall, I’ve been curious to know more of both Doug’s and Christina’s story. Luckily, The Legacy, the fourth book of the Restoration series by Dan Walsh and Gary Smalley, provided me with just that. It is a great follow-up novel to the previous one, focusing on Doug and Christina while revisiting the entire Anderson family again and tying together the many storylines’ loose ends. It is emotional and heartwarming, especially in its retelling of the classic biblical story of the Prodigal Son. I think any fans of the series will be pleased with this satisfying, concluding novel. It is worth the read.

Thanks to Revell Reads, I received a copy of The Legacy and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

About the Book
★★★★★
A vacation to Sunset Cove was her way of celebrating and thanking her parents. After all, Claire Dellamore's childhood was like a fairytale. But with the help of Luke Elwell, Claire discovers that fairytale was really an elaborate lie…

The minute she steps inside the grand Inn at Ocean's Edge, Claire Dellamare knows something terrible happened there. She feels it in her bones. Her ensuing panic attack causes a scene, upsetting her parents. Claire attempts to quiet her nerves with a walk on the beach, to no avail. She's at too great a distance to make out details, but she believes she witnesses a murder on a nearby cliff. When local police find no evidence of foul play, they quickly write off the "nervous" woman's testimony as less than credible.

But Luke Elwell, home on leave from the Coast Guard, has reason to believe Claire. Years ago when his mother went missing, Luke's father suspected she'd been murdered. He died never having convinced the police to investigate. So when an employee of the grand hotel doesn't show up for work, Luke steps in to help Claire track down the missing woman.

As Claire and Luke put together the pieces of a decades-old mystery, they discover that some family secrets refuse to stay buried. And some passions are worth killing for.

Colleen Coble certainly starts her newest series, Sunset Cove, intriguingly well. The Inn at Ocean’s Edge captured my attention with all the things I typically love in Coble’s books and I had a hard time putting it down. In a plot ominously riddled with well-kept secrets, familial lies and lurking danger, the suspense of unexpected twists and astounding revelations kept me on my toes, making me wait until the very end to truly understand how all the pieces (despite my constant and close guessing). And of course, I can’t forget to mention the wonderfully sweet romance and pursuit of family, which both successfully aid the suspense in making this novel an all-around entertaining read. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the series’ next book. For fans of romantic suspense, I highly recommend The Inn at Ocean’s Edge.

About the Book
★★★★★
Two women, one in the present day and one in 1942, each hope for a brighter future. But they'll both have to battle through their darkest days to reach it.

Today. With the grand opening of her new gallery and a fairytale wedding months away, Sera James appears to have a charmed life. But in an instant, the prospect of a devastating legal battle surrounding her fiancĂ© threatens to tear her dreams apart. Sera and William rush to marry and are thrust into a world of doubt and fear as they defend charges that could separate them for life.

June 1942. After surviving the Blitz bombings that left many Londoners with shattered lives, Kája Makovsky prayed for the war to end so she could return home to Prague. But despite the horrors of war, the gifted journalist never expected to see a headline screaming the extermination of Jews in work camps. Half-Jewish with her family in danger, Kája has no choice but to risk everything to get her family out of Prague. But with the clutches of evil all around, her escape plan crumbles into deportation, and Kája finds herself in a new reality as the art teacher to the children of Terezin.

Bound by a story of hope and the survival of one little girl, both Sera and Kája will fight to protect all they hold dear.

And Kristy Cambron does it again: her newest novel, A Sparrow in Terezin (the follow-up to The Butterfly and the Violin) tells another heart-wrenchingly beautiful, moving, hard-to-put-down story. With two distinct plots, alternating between the present day and the era of World War II, Cambron crafts an intertwining narrative featuring the beauty of hope and sacrifice in the face of the cruelest tragedy and inhumanity, and as I read, it continually tugged at my heartstrings. From London’s Blitz to a Nazi concentration camp, the historical aspects are vivid, captivating and interesting, shaping the course of both the historical and contemporary plotlines. A powerful and inspiring read, A Sparrow in Terezin will not disappoint fans of historical fiction. (Note: if you’re interested in A Sparrow in Terezin, please start by reading The Butterfly and the Violin. It will help in understanding and enjoying the contemporary plotline.)
